In the fall of 2004, a group of six alpha phi alpha men came together to discuss ways in which they could collectively make a difference in North Central Georgia area. Most of them, who had not been active with the fraternity for some time, met with Rufus Johnson, then a member of Pi Gamma Lambda Chapter, Fort McPherson, Georgia. The original plan was to reactivate Omicron Omicron Lambda that had been chartered in Griffin in the 1980’s. The group met at Cowan Road Middle School, Griffin. They included Randall Ponder, William Matchett, Edward Morrow, SR., George Tate, Cleopatrick Lacy, Aveory Allen, and Rufus Johnson.
Realizing that reactivating a chapter would be more challenging, the group decided to seek a new charter with brothers living in Henry, Spaulding, Fayette, Newton, Pike, Butts Lamar, and Clayton counties. As word circulated that efforts were under way to charter a chapter in this catchment area, the numbers grew and grew. Rufus Johnson had been serving as leader of the group and would serve as the member who would complete the application for chartering alumni chapters. By this time, the group was meeting at Union Grove High School, McDonough. Brothers included Ken Albright, Curtis Amour, Jr., Marvin Brown Louis Childers, Lavian Coleman, Michael Daniels, George Dillard, Pierre Edwards, Billy Evans, Kenneth Green, James Gist II, Christopher Holmes, Juan Johnson, Rufus Johnson, Tony Jones, Jeffrey Jordan, Cleopatrick Lacy, Frank Marzo, William Matchett, Tyrus McDowell, Edward Morrow, Sr., Jerome Neal, Jr., Jerryal Pettigrew, Randall Ponder, John Reynolds, William Simmons, Vanthony Smith, Gary Stewart, Willie Sullivan, Antonio Sutton, George Tate, Germaine Toliver, Bradley Watkins, and Perry Williams. The first officers were: President (Rufus Johnson); Vice President (Vanthony Smith); Recording Secretary (William Simmons); Financial Secretary (Kenneth Green); Treasurer (William Matchett); Membership Intake Coordinator (Perry Williams); Director of Educational activities (Randall Ponder); Chaplain (Cleopatrick Lacy); Historian (Ken Albright); Parliamentarian (Edward Morrow, Sr.); Sergeant at Arms (Jerome Neal, Jr.); Editor to the Sphinx (John Reynolds); Correspondent Secretary (James Gist II). The group has grown to more than 50 men.
Over the last four years, members of the fraternity in Henry county area have attended District, Regional, and National Conventions in an effort to remain active with the National Organization. At the National Convention in the summer of July 2008, The Membership, Rules, and Extension Committee formally recommended to the National Organization that brothers within the North Central Georgia area be approved for alumni chapter status. The summer of 2008 the brothers also presented their first chapter event. The Amandla Arts Trio, a vocal group that presents operatic jazz, and Caribbean music. In the fall of 2008, one of the chapter founders and former Director of Educational Activities, Brother Randall Ponder, entered Omega Chapter. The Ceremony was held at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Brother Rev. Bradley Watkins serving as Liturgist. The Randall D. Ponder scholarship fund was later established in his honor. On January 17, 2009 The Rho Sigma Lambda Chapter held its first Annual Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Dinner Dance – celebrating, The Man, The Message, The Movement.
